[CHARACTER INFO]

CHARACTER NAME: Given name: Hogan Bight “Alias”: Crucible

For trivia, true name: Teranyex

SERIES:  Dragonlance

CHRONOLOGY: 424 AC (Three years after Return of the Exile and directly after the events of the short story ‘The Eight’)

CLASS: Hero

BACKGROUND:

Long history is long >.>

Here in is contained the known and suspected history of the Great Wyrm Bronze dragon Teranyex, also known in as Crucible and Lord Governor Hogan Bight of Sanction during the Age of Mortals. For ease of reference his history has been broken up into the age of the world of Krynn in which it was involved.

Age of Dreams

Hatching (~1700 AC - exact year unknown)
It is suspected that for much of his younger life Crucible took to exploring the world, making use of his alternate forms to observe and help the lesser races of the world where he could. His first few hundred years spent in the time during the birth of nations, such as Istar, Sancrist and Solamnia.

During this period while spending time in his true form he took on the mortal name, Crucible, to those humans he encountered rather than his true name as is a common occurrence among dragons.

Third dragon War (The Human War) (1060BC – 1018BC)

For the majority of the third dragon war, the dragon’s stood apart not taking part in what was a largely human war. Indeed to most dragons the third dragon war would be known as the human war. Nevertheless although Crucible did not actively participate until Huma rose in to prominence he did as many other dragons did, took on a human form and aided where he could indirectly, observing aspects of the war where he could.

When Huma’s call went out and the metallic dragon’s rallied to his cause, Crucible joined with them in his true form to fight alongside human forces. Taking on a human rider (whose name has been lost to time) and utilizing one of the great dragon lances forged to take on the forces of darkness.

After the great victory and sacrifice of Huma and his beloved dragon Heart to bind the Queen of Darkness Takhisis and her Chromatic dragons, Crucible and near all other Metallic dragons withdrew in lawful exile to their ancestral homes, the Dragon Isles in order to maintain the balance.

Age of Might

Life on Dragon Isles (1018BC – 292AC)

For many centuries the Metallic dragons enjoyed a golden age of prosperity, peace and coexistence with the lesser races that also called the Isles their homes. During this period for the most part the dragons of the Isles had little knowledge of the happenings beyond their shores bar that little knowledge gleaned from trusted travellers whom they had allowed to reach their isles.

Making his home on the Isle of Tayol, the isle which the Bronze dragon Clan called its’ home, Crucible spent many centuries studying, exploring the workings of magic itself, creating great artworks and delving into a vast variety of knowledge.

During this great period of time it is quite possible that Crucible took a mate, however little is known from the dragon isles and what may have become of such a union only Crucible could say and it is not a time that he himself talks openly about.

Even as the dragon’s of the Isle’s slept more and more often, Crucible was among those to notice the departure of the gods, though sheltered as they were none felt the true impact of the first Cataclysm on Krynn and before long Crucible himself joined his brethren in slumber.

Age of Despair

The dragon’s oath (292AC-352AC)

Unaware as they slumbered that the eggs that had been stored away had been stolen out from under their noses, they were soon rudely awakened by an apparition of the Dark Queen herself, informing them of their situation before she coerced many into an Oath that would prevent them from intervening in the coming war for the sake of their unborn children.

Crucible however did not undertake the oath, not trusting in the word of Takhisis and her minions and was forced to leave the Isles lest face retribution for his decision. Others likewise shared his opinions on the matter, working together under great secrecy to search for the stolen eggs and impede the Dark Queen’s war in any way they could.

The Broken pact and the War of the lance (352-353 AC)

Once proof of the Dark Queen’s grave deception and the horror’s she had wrought on many of their eggs, Crucible took up arms to take an active part along with great numbers of other dragons who had come to their senses once proof was at hand, aiding the forces of light in overcoming the dragon armies.

Post War of the lance, Chaos War

Once the war had passed Crucible spent a few years longer with the knights before once more he travelled the world in human and animal form. His travels took him far and wide, aiding where he could when the Knights of Takhisis rose to power and Chaos was unleashed.

He took rider once more as the Chaos war’s and likely would have been slain in the final battle had he not been severely injured in battle and his rider slain. After the war and his recovery he slipped out of the public light once more his new path drew him to one place that he felt he could make a difference a place that had been the sight of great evil in the past, Sanction. After some time getting to know the city in other forms, finally taking on a face Sanction would recognise for a great many years to come, the mysterious and enigmatic Hogan Bight.

Age of Mortals

Post Chaos War- The taming of the Lords of Doom and the Governorship of Sanction (389AC-425AC)

As Hogan Bight, Crucible was quick to proclaim himself Lord Governor of the lawless city. Few in the city opposed him directly as he showed his power in the Taming of the Lords of Doom, the ring volcanoes that surrounded the city, diverting lava, ash and smoke away from the city with his powers.

Bringing law where there had been little, forming a government where there was none. Crucible brought a time of prosperity the likes of which the Sanction had never before seen. Outer influences ever sought to take the city back from his reigns; to that end he fortified the city, forming the powerful city guard and the Governor’s guards to protect Sanction from the threats of the many forces that wished sanction for their own. Keeping even the dragon lord Onysablet at bay through diplomacy and appealing to her scientific nature.

During the first few years of his reign he works to destroy the remains of the temple of Luerkhisis, the sight of the foul experiments the agents of Takhisis performed on the stolen metallic dragon eggs in order to form the Draconians. He formed an agreement with the surviving shadow people that resided beneath the mountains in Sanction.

In the years leading up to 419 AC and the Sailor’s Scourge outbreak Bight begins to suspect that the Commander of his bodyguard Ian Durne is a traitor.

Clandestine Circle 419 AC

Sailors Scourge takes hold in sanction after an infected ship sails into the harbor. The virulent disease spreads rapidly, in an attempt to combat the spread Bight put out a strict quarantine order until the Scourge could be stopped.

After having caught his interest Bight inducted Lynn of Gateway (Linsha Majere operating undercover) as a squire to his guards despite the wishes of the Commander. Lynn had attempted to save Bight from a diseased crew member aboard the infected vessel during the inspection of the vessel in question.

When asked to take a bodyguard to protect him when he was to leave to consult a contact he did not hesitate to take Lynn. That certain contact turned out to be Dragon lord Onysablet. The meeting, while brief and the journey itself proves fruitful. The journey allowed him to learn more about his newest bodyguard. Already he knew that she hid many secrets but is ultimately a good soul at heart. From Sable he learned a few hints as to the nature of the Sailor’s Scourge.

Gives Linsha an amulet constructed of a bronze dragon scale, one of his own, and enchanted with protective spells. Watched almost protectively over Lynn in his alternate tom cat form and made himself known to Varia, Linsha’s owl, who appeared to find it all so very amusing.

Is protected Linsha from an assassination attempt while he’s working his spells to control the eruption of the lava dome. Once complete he takes on his draconic form and saved Linsha in turn, slaying Ian Durne, healing Linsha and destroying the fleet of ships the knights of Neraka had sent to invade his city. Sinking every single ship they had sent.

In the aftermath of the attack Crucible shared a deep conversation with Linsha within her dream, with aid he returned her to his palace and put her under the healer’s care. Once she awoke he revealed that he knew her identity and offered her asylum under his care, knowing the lengths she had gone to in order to protect him. To which she politely refused and returned to her order to face her trial.

During the intervening time, Bight aided Linsha once more in putting a word in to the Solamnic’s that praised what Linsha had done for him.

Missing City 421

After receiving a call for aid from Varia, Crucible leaves Sanction to come to Linsha’s aid, and to help in finding the missing dragon lord Iyesta, an old friend of his.

Arrives to find the Dragonlord Thunder’s forces fighting a winning battle for control of the missing City, fights Thunder in a delaying tactic and receives a broken wing and torn membrane from brute attackers as he flees underground with the militia.

Situation is explained, Iyesta had been killed and missing city over run, by Brutes, after looking over the body of his dead friend he swears vengeance and takes Linsha and her trusted friend Lanther to check on the eggs Iyesta had entrusted to He and Linsha, Finding the dead body of the eggs mother and the eggs missing.

Joins the militia in their retreat, taking on his orange tomcat form to more easily conceal himself. Watching over Linsha in that form, and forced to remain, unable to return to Sanction due to his wounds.

A plan is hatched and put into motion, in which Thunder is lured underground and the Abyssal lance, the weapon used to kill the two Brasses is used against the large blue with the aid of Linsha and a small band of centaurs.

Crucible, wounded further during the fight takes on the form of the tom cat and is carried out by Linsha and they escape with the surviving forces.

Weeks pass and his wounds heal, soon able to take wing again, reluctant to leave Linsha but even more reluctant to leave Sanction to its own devices, he makes the hard choice to leave Linsha to return to Sanction.

(More) Trouble in the Missing City and capture by Tarmak’s

Varia comes to him once again has to decide once more between Sanction and Linsha, feels sanction was slipping away from him, sensing there would be something coming that would threaten to take Sanction from him, the choice forced him to decide between his city, and the woman he had come to care for. In the end he chose Linsha.

Travelling to the Missing city Crucible locates the captured Linsha in the Tarmak’s camp in the missing city, using his cat form to remain unseen. Though is lured into a trap by a traitor, who tipped off the Tarmak and used his caring for Linsha as bait, luring him into the open where he was struck by an Abyssal bolt while shape shifting. The Tarmaks held him captive by threat of harm to Linsha as well as their control over the bolt that could kill him if allowed to.

Unable to do anything but brood he was forced to travel alongside the Tarmak forces, and unable to do anything but watch as the Tarmak leader defiled and killed one of the brass eggs for a twisted ritual.

Before the battle with Militia forces was to be conducted the true traitor is revealed, Lanther, a supposed friend of Linsha and member of the Steel legion.

Crucible refused to fight against the forces of the Militia and lashed out at his captors, forcing Lanther to attempt to use the barb to end him. However Linsha arrived in time to save him from the bolt with aid from leaves of the World tree, in the process he had to shape shift in order for her to reach the bolt. This process revealed his true identity to Linsha and the Militia present at the time.

At her horror and fury at the revelation she sent him away from the fighting to the militia lines, having intended to join him later after dealing with Lanther. However before she could be reunited with him she is captured by Lanther and shipped off to the Tarmak homeland.

With the aid of the healers of the plains, Crucible recovered from the injuries suffered at the hands of the Tarmaks. With Linsha Captured he did all he could to aid the Militia forces against the Tarmaks.

When Varia heard Linsha’s call from afar the pair set off in search of her, and intended to travel all the way to the Tarmak’s continent, had they not come across Linsha and her companion Callista floating atop the body of the Brass Sirenfall, who had rescued them.

Tales were recounted between both Linsha and Crucible, after Crucible had carried them to safety and back toward the missing city. During this time Crucible made amends with Linsha and together they retrieve the eggs, whose hatchings they discovered had been accelerated artificially.

With the eggs so close to hatching Crucible took them to the volcano Flashfire for safekeeping. The traitor, Lanther, pursued them with his forces. The traitor drew Crucible into the open and during the encounter, brought him down with potent poison arrows before using the Abyssal lance on him, lodging it in his thigh. Fortunately not an immediately fatal blow, the timely arrival of Linsha had saved him from the killing blow.

Even as the events took place the gods returned to the world, Takhisis is defeated and killed. Lanther losing his power, Linsha with aid guides the eggs as they hatched, the newly hatched wyrmlings killed Lanther.

With the aid of Tancred the Abyssal lance is removed and Crucible healed.

The Aftermath of the War of Souls-

Together with the eight brass wyrmlings Crucible accompanies Linsha to Sancrist for her to report to her Solamnic superiors, convincing them to allow her to continue to watch over and take care of the eight wyrmlings

On their journey back toward Sanction, Bight, Linsha, Varia and the eight wyrmlings took a detour to Solace, the home of the Majere family. It was there that Bight and Linsha were joined in marriage before Linsha’s family.

PERSONALITY:

The first impression one might have upon encountering Teranyex, as either Hogan Bight, or Crucible as that he is confident, self assured, and may come quite likely come off as arrogant, not far from the mark. Though after coming to know Crucible/Bight the wisdom, stubbornness and experience that underlie this confidence and arrogance are slowly revealed.

A Bronze dragon at heart (quite literally) Teranyex is loyal and dependable to those he comes to know. Though trust is something that must be earned, there have been few he fully trusts in the previous thirty years, something that contributed to the success at keeping his true identity secret.

Teranyex finds great fascination in the workings of people, and especially the people of his city, with great diversity and ability to survive together as a community, no matter the situation thrown at them. Whether a plague, or an invading army.

During his rule of Sanction he has been described as one of the most confident, self-satisfied man some people had ever known. Pugnacious, tough, and often the rogue, he ruled his kingdom as if ordained by the gods before they left. He gave some the impression that he found the world and its people endlessly amusing, and only a veneer of civility kept him from laughing at everything.

The self-confident rascal in him at times can seem to not take things too seriously because he is convinced he could handle any crisis, no matter how small or large. Something not in most cases based solely on ego given his vast experience and skills. While his ego and confidence may be considerable he is not one to complain of his own ailments or situation, no matter what it may be, nor is he one to shirk work that need be done.

Has a great capacity for patience balanced by an equal capacity for great anger, especially in regards to those who would threaten those he cares for.

He is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in, when Takhisis stole the eggs of the metallic dragons where the majority of the Metallic dragon’s were forced to take the Oath, blinded into putting their trust in a being who knew nothing but deceit Crucible had the strength to refuse, to take their fate into his own claws, an act that forced him away from his home to avoid the harsh punishment those who took the oath. He regards those who took the oath with disdain, by taking the oath they, however unwittingly, had condoned the creation of the Dark Queen’s malevolent actions in twisting their children into the draconian shock troopers.

Unlike many dragons, especially those who took the oath, he holds no grudge against draconian kind, no wish to slaughter them as others have in the name of misguided ‘mercy’. Despite the origins of their creation he holds respect for them as a fledgling species of their own, he has watched from afar as they had grown and formed the nation of Teyr. Indeed he owes them much for the actions of Governor Kang and his army during the final battle of Sanction, were it not for their intervention, his city would have fallen in his absence. In recent years he had offered something of an alliance between the nation of Teyr and Sanction a fact that was to the surprise of many no doubt due to the usual relations between dragons and draconians.

Has a great caring and love for Linsha Majere, whom he married despite their physical differences, knowing things may change at any moment and despite the fact that he may likely outlive her, something may happen and he may die the next day.

As with most Bronze dragons he has a quirky affinity for small fluffy animals, indeed in particular a particular fondness for taking on the guise of a small orange tom cat. Often taking on this form when the need to investigate or explore an area without arousing suspicion arises, though he is not particular adverse to scritches while in this form.

POWER:

All abilities listed are from canon.

The three power sets Crucible has access to include Bronze Dragon(Extraordinary abilities), Bronze Dragon (Supernatural abilities) and Draconic magic

Great Wyrm Bronze dragon (Extraordinary abilities)(Canon)

Crucible is a particularly large dragon (140ft), this power includes all natural (non-magical based) traits of being a Krynnish bronze dragon. These include:

Keen senses:  As a dragon, Crucible’s sight is particularly sharp, able to see twice as well as a human in daylight and four times as well in the dark. He is able to see in complete darkness up to a distance of roughly one hundred and twenty feet and can use his heightened sense of smell and hearing to detect anyone within sixty foot of him even if out of sight or invisible.

Durable scales:  His scales are considerably durable able to fend off and deflect blows that would otherwise pierce normal armour. However weapons that are supernatural in nature will have a greater chance of piercing the scales.

Considerable strength: As both a dragon and one that happens to be of vast proportions Crucible has the strength to match.

Winged flight:  Pretty simple, has wings can fly. However due to previous injuries to his wings prolonged flight can cause discomfort and pain after time for Crucible.

Ability to breathe underwater:  As a bronze dragon Crucible has the ability to breathe under water and is able to remain below the surface indefinitely, along with this he can swim at considerable speeds in his natural form, easily out running ships and vessels of his time.

Immunity to Electricity, Sleep and Paralysis: Due to his nature Crucible has a near immunity to electricity, although electrical attacks from those of draconic nature still have some effect. Dragons of Krynn also show an immunity to sleep and paralysis based supernatural effects.

Great Wyrm Bronze dragon (Supernatural abilities)(Canon)

The dragons of Krynn, from chromatic to metallic all are beings of potent magic. This manifests itself in a number of supernatural abilities, those of which Crucible possesses are as follows:

Breath weapon:- An ability that comes to all the dragons of Krynn, Crucible is shown to have two distinct breath weapons, that of a searing beam of light that is able to melt rock and that of a blast of lightning. As a bronze dragon he should technically have another, a cone of repulsive gas,n.

Natural Telepathy:  As a Bronze dragon Crucible has a natural talent for detecting the thoughts of those around him, and can speak telepathically others around him, a particularly useful talent when in his alternate form as a cat or while in flight.

Speak with animals: Another trait that comes to all bronze dragons is the ability to understand and speak to animals of all manner of species, from cats to dolphins and many others.

Draconic Shape shifting: Bronze dragon’s as with many metallic dragons have the innate ability to alter their forms, able to take on a large variety of different forms and able to retain a good measure of their innate strength and a measure of their keen senses in their chosen form. Such as the ability knock over a grown man with a pounce as a cat, to move a boulder that would take ten men an hour to move with but one hand, or throw a sword with such strength to pierce metal armour to the hilt and carry throw the victim several feet further.

When shape shifting into a humanoid form this includes clothing as well, from simple to extravagant Lord Governors robes, he can’t however form armour.

Dragon fear:- All dragons of Krynnish origin exude a powerful supernatural presence known as dragon fear, one that can cause paralysing fear in those that are not used to the presence of such a dragon or those who are considered his foes. The effects of the dragon fear are lessened for those with particularly strong wills.

Draconic Magic(Canon):

Includes all magical abilities not covered by simply being a dragon, this includes his ability to bend reality to his will in the form of spell, including his geomancy. These manifestations are an exertion of the innate will and power that resides strongly within weaved through.

Control water: Being a bronze dragon, Crucible’s affinity for water extends to his magic as well, able to cause significant drops in water levels which can cause small whirlpools or cause water rise and form a large ‘hump’ above the surface, causing ships to slide away or for water to flood its banks if utilized near land.

Weather control:  Crucible can manipulate the weather patterns within a four mile radius when he utilizes this ability. This use of his magic requires considerable focus to make use of and must rest before he can utilize it again.

Spellcasting:  As with many magical beings, Crucible can form his will into more structured spells that he has developed over his many years. Here is a list of those he has access to.

Geomancy: aspect of his magic is his ability to manipulate the natural world, for example divert the flow of lava and to tame or control volcanoes (notable examples include the Lords of Doom) or to cause earthquakes and sinkholes as shown when he sunk a warehouse to stop the spread of a fire, or collapse a tunnel on an opponent.

[CHARACTER SAMPLES]

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[A tall man wearing what seemed to be a simple gold tinged though well kept shirt, though who held himself with confidence as he addressed the device ]

Ah good, this is working.

Allow me to introduce myself. I am Hogan Bight, Lord Governor of the city of Sanction. A city now worlds away it would seem.

[A name that few would recognise, although there was the chance that almost anyone drawn from Krynn would know the name of his city for all the history it bore.]

[His expression took a solemn turn as he continued]

This world and technology is for the most part unfamiliar to me. Any assistance in furthering my understanding of the situation and world in which I now find myself would be greatly appreciated.

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:

Be it Sanction or The City, people tended to ignore stray cats that wandered the edges of streets and back alleys. It was something that Crucible had counted on as he explored this new city, getting a feel for the ebb and flow of this new society, if he was to be stuck for sometime he needed to know just what he would be working with as much as he disliked the idea of being kept from his wife and city.

After a time he decided to rest a while in his explorations, curling up behind a bush just by the side of a rather large lake in the middle of a park that he had discovered, drifting into a light slumber. His rest however was disturbed some time later however by raised voices and the scent of humans nearby. Alert, the dragon in feline form focused on the voices, two, no, three males and a single female.

“I won’t tell you again, your money, phone and that pretty gold necklace of yours and we may let you live, if you’re lucky,” The one seemingly in the lead of the trio growled as the other two chuckled menacingly. Alley bashers or worse, not giving them a moment longer to consider their actions, the trees around the creek were suddenly lit up as Crucibles form rapidly expanded not twenty feet from them.

Two of the three immediately dropped the knives they had been carrying, reduced to stuttering messes from the dragon fear that struck them like a hammer, the leader managed to retain his wits somewhat, raising his pistol shakely at the immense dragon that had suddenly appeared. “S-stay back!”

The immense bronze scaled beast approached slowly and deliberately, growling menacingly deep in his chest, “Leave and do not return,” he commanded in a tone that brooked no question, small sparks of electricity arching about his maw to add to the threat, “This area is now under my watch, return and you shall face my wrath,” The gun clattered to the ground as the three stumbled over themselves to flee the area.

Shaking his head slowly at their retreat before looking to the woman who had passed out in fright, picking her up carefully in a claw to place her on a nearby bench before he returned to his feline form, setting himself down beneath the bench to watch over her until she awoke.
